Diabetes is a condition where the amount of glucose in your blood is too high because the body cannot use it properly.

These symptoms are common to both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

  • Feeling very thirsty.
    • Urinating more frequently than usual, particularly at night.
    • Feeling tired all the time.
    • Loss of weight and muscle bulk.
    • Itchiness around your genital area.
    • Blurred vision caused by the lens of your eyes changing shape.
    • Cuts and grazes taking longer to heal than normal.
    • Vomiting and/or heavy breathing also can occur at later stages.

Project

The Fighting Diabetes (FD) project has been developed by CWTC to support people, particularly living in economic/social deprivation and poverty.

The project includes using creative activities (121& group-based) as a medium to improve their health and wellbeing. This will enable people (via learning) to fulfil their health needs by working to address issues at the earliest possible stage- preventing them from falling into crisis in later life.

This coupled with social training i.e healthy diet eating sessions, basic life skills, confidence, assertiveness and attitude, thinking and behavioural sessions, through the involvement of service users in the design and delivery of activities, the FD project aims to raise awareness and tackle/reduce type-2 diabetes which is also very common within South Asian communities.

The project encourages more user led-physical activities and more healthy options when it comes to diet; and cooking /preparation of healthy low budget meals.

 Outcomes

The project helps to improve health and wellbeing of local people/communities and beneficiaries who would otherwise develop (long term) ill health caused by type -2 diabetes, obesity, poor dieting, poor mental health and wellbeing through lack of physical exercise.

Bi-lingual sessions will also be run by bilingual service users to support language issues.
